It is well known that scuba diving exposes your skin to unique challenges, such as:
-Sunburn
-Cold water
-And contact with potentially harmful marine life.
So, fellow mermaids, to ensure your skin stays healthy, soft and radiant, here are some essential tips on how to protect your skin while scuba diving.
Make sunscreen your best friend:
Sun protection should be a top priority for any scuba diver. Even underwater, harmful UV rays can penetrate the surface and damage your skin.
At least 30 minutes prior to your dive generously apply a water-resistant sunscreen with a minimum SPF rating of 30 to all exposed areas of your body. Don’t forget often-overlooked areas including your ears, the back of your neck, and the backs of your hands.
You should reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you’re diving in shallow water.

Wear a wetsuit:
A well-fitted wetsuit is not only crucial for maintaining your body temperature but also for protecting your skin while scuba diving.
A wetsuit acts as a barrier against potential irritants, UV rays and harmful marine life.
Choose the appropriate thickness of the suit depending on the water temperature, and try to cover as much skin as possible.
Also make sure to thoroughly wash your wetsuit at the end of each day in freshwater. This ensures your suit is completely clean and ready for your next dive. Even better is to use your own scuba diving equipment instead of rental equipment as this ensures your equipment is clean and won’t cause any skin irritation.

Hydration, Hydration, Hydration!
Staying hydrated is key to healthy skin while scuba diving.
Dehydration can make your skin more susceptible to sunburn and dryness. Drink plenty of water before and after your dive to ensure your skin stays well-hydrated.

Don’t skimp on the moisturiser!
After your dive, treat your skin to some post-dive TLC.
Rinse off any saltwater and sand from your skin. Then, apply a generous amount of moisturiser to rehydrate your skin. Look for products that are gentle and suitable for your skin-type.
I love to apply a light facial mist such as the Mario Badescu Facial Spray as soon as I am out of the water. Enriched with Aloe, herbs and rosewater it is the perfect skin pick-me-up for after a dive (smells pretty amazing too!)

Take dry clothes:
As soon as you are back on the boat or shore, take off that wetsuit and thoroughly dry yourself before putting on some clean dry clothes. This will prevent any irritation from salt water and stop your skin from drying out.

Scuba diving offers unparalleled opportunities, but it is essential to protect your skin during your dives. By following these tips and being proactive in safeguarding your skin, you can enjoy the wonders of the ocean while keeping your skin healthy and radiant.
Remember, a little precaution goes a long way in preserving your skin’s health and ensuring your scuba diving experiences are as enjoyable as they are safe.
So, dive in, explore, and stay salty! X
