The TOP 5 Scuba diving Hairstyles!

top hairstyles to wear when scuba diving

Scuba diving is an experience that everyone should try at least once. But for those with long ‘mermaid-esque’ hair, scuba diving can also cause frustration due to the inevitable tangles that occur while diving.

But fear not as I have you covered with the 5 best scuba diving hairstyles to keep your locks tangle-free during your scuba diving adventures. Say goodbye to underwater hair woes and say hello to diving in style!

1. The Classic Braid:

One of the most tried and trusted scuba diving hairstyles is the classic braid.

Whether it’s a simple three-strand braid, a French braid, or a Dutch braid, this hairstyle keeps your hair neatly contained and prevents it from floating around underwater. The tight weave of the braid ensures that your hair stays in place, even in strong currents.

I personally prefer the simple three-strand braid as it is a quick and easy hair style and easy to remove at the end of the dives. A simple three-strand braid is perfect for scuba divers with long hair.

2.The Low Bun:

A low bun is another excellent scuba diving hairstyle. By securing your hair in a neat tightly wrapped bun low on your head, you reduce the chances of it getting tangled.

Make sure to use hair ties that won’t slip or break easily underwater. Also by positioning the bun low on the back of your head it won’t interfere with your mask strap and can even help keep your mask strap in place.

If this option is for you, I recommend plaiting your hair before securing it in a bun. This adds an extra layer of protection against those pesky tangles!

3. Use a headband or bandana:

Another practical option for divers with shorter hair is wearing a headband or bandana. A bandana can help keep your hair away from your face and minimise the risk of it getting tangled. It is also great to keep those pesky fly away hairs out of your mask to create a tight mask seal.

There are some beautiful ocean themed bandanas on the market and a bandana also offers great UV protection for the surface interval.

4.Go one step further and make use of a hood!

If you want to go the extra mile in protecting your hair when scuba diving, consider using a diving hood. Wearing a dive hood will keep your hair completely tucked in and protected, and of course if you need it, keep you warm!

You don’t need to use the hood on your wetsuit, you can purchase a separate hood with different colours and designs allowing you to add a personal touch to your diving gear!

Before your dive, make sure that there is no hood in the diving mask. The mask needs a tight seal to prevent any water and it is very common to see divers with the edge of their hotel trapped inside the mask.

5. Use fabric hair bands:

Regardless of the scuba diving hairstyle you choose, invest in fabric hair bands.

Fabric hair bands provide a secure hold, ensuring your chosen hairstyle remains intact throughout your dive. Elastic hair bands can get stuck very easily in your hair and can pull and tear the hair if you try to remove them when your hair is wet.

There are some beautiful environmentally friendly fabric hair bands that you can invest in. Kooshoo is a family owned business that sell plastic free and ethically made hair ties and scrunchies that are guranteed to be perfect for your next diving adventure!

Don’t forget the pre-dive hair care:

It is essential to take some preventive measures to minimise hair damage and tangling. Consider applying leave-in conditioner or coconut oil to your hair before diving. This will help protect your hair from the drying effects of saltwater and make it easier to comb through after your dive.

There is nothing worse than having an amazing dive and then spending the next two hours going through a whole bottle of conditioner and breaking your hairbrushes in the shower. So by choosing one of these scuba diving hairstyles, you can dive in style and comfort, knowing your hair is protected.

Whether you opt for a classic braid, a low bun, or a stylish dive hood, your hair will remain tangle-free, allowing you to enjoy your diving experience to the fullest.

So, gear up, dive in, and let your hair flow freely in the currents (tangle-free, of course!)
